Young Peacemakers of Vladikavkaz met President of Ingushetia

Young peacemakers of the Republic of Nothern Ossetia-Alania visited the city of Magas, the capital of the Republic of Ingushetia (Russian Federation) December 24, 2002 to take part in the round table on cooperation of youth.

After the round table the delegations of two republics met with Murat Zyazikov, President of Ingushetia and have presented to him the tie of three colors (blue, red and green) — the symbol of young peacemakers of Vladikavkaz.

First Session of the National Committee for the Celebration of Jubilee

The first session of the National Committee for the celebration of the 55-anniversary of UNTSO and the 30-th anniversary of Russian participation in UN peacekeeping operations took place at the UN Information Center in Moscow (Glazovsky pereulok, 4/16) February 12, 2003.

Members of the session elected Dr.Valery Guerguel (Milob UNTSO 1973–76) as the Executing Secretary of the Committee and adopted in general the following Plan of Activities for the celebration of the jubilee.

  1. Peacemaking Action «Decade of Voluntary Deeds».
    To be carried out from December1 to December 10, 2002 by schools of peace in cooperation with the UN Information Center in Moscow.

    Note: the action was carried out in Russia by 50 High Schools certified by the Museum as Schools of Peace. For the details see http://www.un-museum.ru/vestnik/73.htm

  2. Collection of Signatures in Support of the Letter to the UN SG with the proposal to consider a possibility to award UNVs and civil personnel serving with UN operations with the special badge on the occasion of the 55-th anniversary of UNTSO.

    Note: Over 2 500 signatures have been collected by young peacemakers by the middle of February, 2003. The text of the letter is published at the address http://www.un-museum.ru/projects/30/55/

  3. Exhibition of Photos to the 55-th Anniversary of UNTSO
    To be carried out by the Museum in cooperation with Troitsk High School in cooperation with Museum and the UN Information Center in Moscow.

  4. Festival of Sports «We are Peacemakers».
    To be organized February 28 and March1, 2003 at the Secondary School # 271.

  5. Meeting of Young Peacemakers with Civil Policemen at the Training Center of Civil Policemen in Domodedovo. To be carried out in cooperation with the Personnel Department of the Ministry of Interior at the period from March 15 to May 15, 2003.

  6. Spring Voluntary Action of Young Peacemakers.
    To be organized from April 11 till May 15, 2003 by clubs of young peacemakers and schools of peace.

  7. Round Table «National Concept for Peacemaking». To be organized in May-June, 2003  in cooperation with the UN Information Center in Moscow.

  8. International Training Course for UNMOs and CivPols. To be organized from June 30 till July 17, 2003 by RUSUNMOC.

  9. Missions of Peace of Young Peacemakers at the Summer Camps «Orlyenok» and «Ocean»
    To be organized in August 2003 in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Institute of Open Education.

  10. Missions of Peace of Young Peacemakers in the Ukraine and in Bulgaria.
    To be organized in June–July, 2003 in cooperation with Moscow Government.

  11. Celebration of the International Peace Day
    To be carried out September 21, 2003 in cooperation with the UN Information Center in Moscow.

  12. Publication of the Third Issue of the Memorial Book «In the Service of Peace» by Museum of Peacekeeping Operations in cooperation with the UN Information Center in Moscow.

  13. Publication of the Book of Memoirs of Russian Peacekeeping Veterans of UN Operations in Former Yugoslavia in cooperation with Russian Academy of Science.

  14. Round Table of Russian Peacekeeping Veterans devoted to the 30-th anniversary of Russian participation in UN peacekeeping operations. To be carried out November 25, 2003 in cooperation with the UN Information Center in Moscow.

Festival of Sports "We are Peacemakers"

Festival of sports devoted to the 55-th anniversary of UNTSO and the 30-th anniversary of Russian participation in UN peacekeeping will be organized from February 28 to March 1, 2003 in Moscow by the Secondary School # 271 (Moscow, Tsander Street, 3) in cooperation with Peace Education Net.

On this occasion the special currency "shkolyarik" was issued by the school parliament for the winners of the contests and competitions who will pay by shkolyariks at the school buffet for their soft drinks and the biscuits. It is already the 7-th festival to be organized by this Secondary School certified as School of Peace in 2001 and in 2002 by the Museum of Peacekeeping Operations. The Program of the festival includes competitions in floorball, footvolley, chess and other sports.

New Exhibits of the Museum in 2003

UN peacekeeping veteran Vladimir Azarov (Yugoslavia and Sierra Leone) has contributed into Museum funds his newly issued book "Perished for their Brothers" devoted to Russian grenadiers killed in Russian-Turkish war of 1877–1878. ISBN 5-87449-031-0.
Another contribution was the toy-bear presented by Captain Jennifer Cline (USA) who graduated from Russian UN Military Observer Course of the "Vystrel" Training Center in Solnechnogorsk. At the graduation ceremony the captain and other graduates from Russia and other countries were awarded with RUSUNMOC graduation badge.

Contest of Posters for the International Year of Sweet Water

The UN Information Center in Moscow and Peace Education Net plan to organize in March and April the contest of posters devoted to the International Year of Sweet Water (2003) proclamed by the GA of the UN. The participants will be the children and youth in the range of 7 to 17 years. The winners of the contest will be awarded in May, 2003 with the special diplomas and presents. The details about the contest conditions and the International Year of Sweet Water may be obtained in the Bulletin "Voice of Peacemakers # 80" and the Press-release of the UN Information Center in Moscow dated January 21, 2003.

National Organizational Committee of Russian Peacekeepers

Representatives of a few Russian ministries, agencies and NGOs became the members of the National Committee and the working group for the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Russian participation in UN peacekeeping operations. The first meeting of the Committee and its working group is shedueled for the first decade of February, 2003 to be held at the UN Information Center in Moscow (Moscow, Glazovsky pereulok, 4/16).
